Drug Use Evaluation on Ceftazidime in a teaching hospital

Abstract
In order to find out whether ceftazidime, a third generation cephalosporin antibiotics, is used appropriately, safely and effectively, a retrospective DUE study was conducted by reviewing 33 charts of patients who were treated in Kangnam St. Mary¢¥s hospital form Feb.1.1994 to Sept. 30.1994. The criteria was modified from the criteria on ceftazidime use established by American Society of Hospital Pharmacists. As a result, 21 cases(63.6%) were met with the criteria for the justification of use. The analyzing process indicators including CBC, SCr, Urine CrCl, history of anaphylaxis were taken before the initial dose, and vital sing monitoring, WBC count, Cheme 12 chemistry during the therapy were relatively well documented showing the accepted levels of above 80%. On the other hand LFT before the initial dose, SCr, Urine CrCl during the therapy were in a low accepted level. As an outcome analysis, the result of blood culture after discontinuing drug were rarely documented with accepted level of 46%. Considering that the DUE program provides a method for defining, assessing and improving the quality of drug use, it is suggested that the above finding should be communicated to the medical staff, and an active intervention, such as feedback control, also be necessary for rational drug use.
